30 Day Anime Challenge - Favorite Anime I've Watched So Far

These are two very different anime series...and I love them both so much!

I know that I'm just supposed to choose one anime for this challenge but I couldn't choose between Kill la Kill and Death Note because I love both of these series. Though I find it funny that these two anime series are almost on complete opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of tone and genre.

So why do I like Kill la Kill? Why do I like Death Note? Well, I can probably list hundreds of reasons of why I consider Kill la Kill and Death Note to be my favorite anime. I can mention the unique and interesting cast of characters from both series, the intense storylines and plot twists, or even the dramatic and epic animation, but what I think make Kill la Kill and Death Note two of my favorites is that they are both representative of what I love about anime as a medium.

I love that anime can take the most mundane and average situations and depict them as extremely serious with the highest of stakes. But that's not all! Anime can also take some unbelievably absurd premise that just sounds silly but throw you into the middle of it and make it feel real and has you on the edge of your seat.

Take Death Note as one example. It's a cat and mouse game between a genius detective and a supernatural serial killer. With that kind of premise the tone is going to be dark and dramatic...sometimes too dramatic. A tennis game can become a fervent battle of the minds and eating potato chips can suddenly seem sinister and clever. The schemes and tricks are so fierce that they are just as heart-pounding and breath-taking as a huge fight from any action series.

And then there is Kill la Kill. At first glance, Kill la Kill seems to be just a bunch of mindless fight scenes, boobs, blood, and humor. But it's so much more than that with a revenge plot that becomes much more complicated than when the show started and the story leads to a huge conspiracy and makes the original antagonist seem like nothing when the real evil shows up. Kill la Kill is an anime where you come for the plot and stay for the actual plot.

I can watch both these series again and again...and I probably will sometime this week. I loved the intenisty of Death Note's clash of geniuses and I loved the non-stop roller-coaster ride of Kill la Kill with all of the fan-service and plot twists! That is why I cannot choose between these two anime series and I consider them both to be my favorites...so far...
