Green Lantern: Secret Origin

What's up, people!

You want to know who the Green Lantern is? Well, then there is no better place to start than with an origin story.

PC: Andrew James Rocha

"Green Lantern: Secret Origin" is written by Geoff Johns with art by Ivan Reis and is an updated retelling of Hal Jordan's 1959 origin. The story tells readers how test pilot Hal Jordan became the Green Lantern and reintroduces classic characters like Carol Ferris, Sinestro, and Hector Hammond, while also adding new story elements like the prophecy of the Blackest Night and introducing future Red Lantern, Atrocitus

"Secret Origin" introduces a Hal Jordan who is both arrogant, selfish, and angry at the world around him. After finding the dying alien, Abin Sur, Hal Jordan is chosen to succeed Abin Sur as the new Green Lantern of space sector 2814 because of his ability to overcome fear. Jordan is trained to be the protector of his space sector by Green Lanterns Kilowog and Tomar-Re, characters who are familiar to older readers.

Hal Jordan also is trained by Green Lantern Sinestro, who is destined to become Hal's greatest foe, but in this story is Hal's mentor and friend. The two investigate the murder of Abin Sur and discover a secret prophecy that will impact subsequent Green Lantern and DC titles and stories.

Overall, this is a fantastic origin that explains the character and world to new readers while also encouraging exploration into previous story lines. "Green Lantern: Secret Origin" beautifully integrates the character's origin into the modern day. Both new and old fans of Green Lantern, should definitely have "Secret Origin" somewhere in their long boxes.
