12 Days of Anime: Kaguya from Kaguya-sama: Love is War

She's brilliant, charming...and she's hopelessly in love.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War was one of the hottest anime to come out this year and while the supporting character Chika Fujiwara stole everyone's hearts, I think that the main character Kaguya Shinomiya is just as charming and adorable...if not more so. Now I could make this post comparing Chika and Kaguya, but I don't wanna make it seem like I think Chika is a bad character. I really like Chika, but I want to shine the spotlight on Kaguya for the day.

So what is it about Kaguya that made her one of my favorite characters of 2019? First off, Kaguya and I have a lot in common. We both come off as cold and distant to others, though hopefully I don't come off as a serial killer like Kaguya seems to the student council treasurer, Ishigami. Also like Kaguya, I don't always know how to express my affection and will come up with schemes to try and get my significant other to be all lovey-dovey so I don't have to...and like Kaguya it doesn't really work.

Kaguya also has a very cute design that can be interpreted in many different ways. On one hand, she can be seen as an intelligent and innocent school girl, which is a part of her character. Other times, she can be seen as a ruthless and sadistic criminal, which she might be. And she can also become a flustered and ridiculous goofball. All of that is a part of her character and it shows in her design and expressions throughout the series.

But what really made me fall in love with Kaguya Shinomiya as a character was her desire to have friends and someone to love her. Sure, Kaguya-sama: Love is War is a romantic comedy and Kaguya's romance and antics with the student council president, Miyuki Shirogane, is the focus, but at the heart of Kaguya, she just really wants friends. As a girl neglected by her wealthy father, she's a bit cold hearted and holds herself as superior to others, but at the end of the day, Kaguya really wants someone to love her, whether it be friends to go shopping with, or a boyfriend who will take her to see fireworks.

Kaguya Shinomiya is a fantastic character that I love and I look forward to seeing her return in the second season of the anime. She's tragic, hilarious, and relatable. If you want to know why I'm hyping her up so much, I highly advise that you watch Kaguya-sama: Love is War. Even if you don't fall in love with Kaguya, I'm sure you'll find some goofy character to call your favorite.
